Dear Senator/ Congresswoman/ Supervisor:

I am a concerned citizen in Marin County, CA.  While dozens of new wireless technologies have been rapidly adopted in the past ten years by commercial, governmental and military organizations, as well as residents of Marin County, there is now substantial scientific and anecdotal evidence that radio-frequency (RF)/ Microwave fields from these new technologies are making us sick. More than six hundred studies have shown links between RF/ EMF fields with multiple diseases, symptoms and bioeffects. More than thirty-thousand physicians and medical professionals signed the Freiburger Appeal, which details professional observations of links between wireless technologies and "learning, concentration, and behavioral disorders (attention deficit disorder, ADD); extreme fluctuations in blood pressure; heart rhythm disorders; heart attacks and strokes among an increasingly younger population; brain-degenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's) and epilepsy; and cancerous afflictions: leukemia, brain tumors." Additionally the physicians observed, "an ever-increasing occurrence of various disorders, often misdiagnosed in patients as psychosomatic such as headaches, migraines; chronic exhaustion; Inner agitation; sleeplessness, daytime sleepiness; tinnitus; susceptibility to infection; and nervous and connective tissue pains, for which the usual causes do not explain even the most conspicuous symptoms."

Meanwhile more than twenty 'new-age' illnesses with no known cause have exploded in the US and in Marin over the past twenty-five years, such as Alzheimer’s, autism, multiple cancers, depression, birth defects and Attention Deficit Disorder.

As Marin County leads the nation in the incidence of many of these illnesses, I am asking for your leadership in drafting and supporting legislation to aggressively investigate the link between wireless technologies and our health. In particular I am requesting your leadership and support on legislation that would formally adopt the Precautionary Principle with respect to adoption of new wireless technologies like WiFi and WiMax at both the Federal level and the local level until much needed research definitively demonstrates that wireless technologies are not impacting our health.

I am also asking for you to take leadership and support legislation that will catalyze academia, industry and the US Government to fund and support studies which specifically target five areas of relatively unexplored research that is highly relevant to the modern model of potential health impacts from radiofrequency fields in our homes and neighborhoods; at work and in our shopping districts.

• Continuous RF Signals: Health impact from exposures to continuous, low-level microwave/ RF fields. Almost no Federal research has been focused on the bioeffects of low-level, continuous exposures. A 1981 Navy study, which used a low-level 2.4 Gigahertz signal (same frequency as microwave ovens, cordless phones and wireless networks), which showed profound bio-effects has remained classified.
• Modulated RF Signals: Bio-effects from modulated signals, which combine more than one frequency. These are transmissions like ATT’s cellular signal, which combines high and extra-low frequencies ELF - 1800 megahertz plus 216 hertz - which is thought to intensify the effect on human biochemistry.
• Pulsed RF Signals: Microwave/ RF signals which are pulsed -- transmitted at distinct intervals -- are thought to be more disruptive to humans, as they have been shown to create higher levels of stress in the human organism.
• Impact to Children: Children/ teenagers are more vulnerable to RF fields as their head size tends to resonate with the size of cellular frequencies (1800-1900 megahertz) and their absorption of microwave radiation is up to five times higher than adults.
• Reproductive Impacts: Multiple scientific studies have demonstrated an increase in miscarriage and birth defects from microwave signals (usually only one). More research is needed to assess the impacts from multiple, simultaneous signals on spontaneous abortion and fetal abnormalities.
